Longarm Quilting Classes

Longarm quilting machine class at Burlington Electric Quilters

Are you tired of crouching over your sewing machine, shoving a basted quilt sandwich around like a sausage? Are you ready for a new quilting skill? Then call Louise and schedule your private class to learn how to use a longarm quilting machine.

In the pre-pandemic days, Burlington Electric Quilters offered group classes to show quilters the basics of loading a quilt on the Gammill machines. Each quilter would experience the joys of easily quilting their own motifs and following a pantograph. After the class, you could reserve a block of time to quilt your next top. Louise adapted her introduction to longarm quilting class and now offers a private four hour session at the same price.

What will you learn in your private longarm coaching session?

You’ll learn how to:

  • pin your quilt top and back to zippers
  • load the top, batting and back onto the frame
  • start and stop the longarm machine
  • prepare your quilt sandwich for motifs
  • quilt across your top using a pantograph or your own free motion motifs.

Your introductory class costs $100 and includes quilting time on your own quilt top and back using a hand guided machine. Don’t have a quilt top ready? No problem! Just bring a length of muslin or choose one of the quilt tops for charity that Burlington Electric Quilters has on hand.

While the group camaraderie isn’t the same, this new format allows you to start quilting immediately, rather than booking a second session to work on the longarm individually.

Build your quilting skills and stand tall as the longarm glides across your nice, flat quilt sandwich – welcome to the world of longarm quilting! Learning how to use a longarm quilting machine isn’t difficult, but many first time quilters have a moment of insecurity. May we offer a few suggestions to make your first longarm quilting experience less stressful?

How do you reserve your private coaching session on the longarm machine?

Call Louise at 781-229-0734 or email her at louise at burlingtonelectricquilters.com. We ask for a 50% deposit at the time of the class reservation, with the remainder due when you arrive for private session. Don’t forget to bring your mask!

The Virtual Quilt Show

Gammill is offering us a great opportunity to take classes online rather than in person because of the pandemic. They have a group of great and experienced teachers, and subjects from beginner to advanced, using a longarm. I’m going – hope to “see” you there!

Click on the picture above to go their website to browse their classes and see if something intrigues you. Each class is only $40 and is chock full of tips, tricks and new ideas.

Boston now has a resident Charm at Laurena’s Longarm Quilting! Whether you are shopping for a mid arm machine or just looking for a more comfortable sit down free motion quilting experience, give Laurena a call.

As soon as we set her up, we pulled out muslin to start playing around.

The tablet is easy to read, the sewing area is beautifully lit and the muslin slid under the presser foot. The Charm is a great choice for free motion quilters, but thanks to the laser light, you can rest a motif on the quilt and follow the light if you would like to follow a written motif.

There’s no zippers needed and no class prerequisite to rent the Charm. Choose from more than 100 quilting threads we have on hand or bring your own. The Charm even has a basting stitch option. If your quilt is not overly large, you could baste it on the machine. Rent the Charm for $12 an hour.

Stop by to welcome our charming new mid arm quilting machine to Burlington. You can give us a call at 781-608-7891 or email info at burlingtonlongarm dot com to set up a time to give it a stitch.

Boston Modern Quilt Guild Charity Afternoon

A glorious day both outdoor and indoor, last Sunday was. We hosted a “quilt-in” for the Boston Modern Quilt Guild on August 10, as they wrap up their Quilts for Boston initiative. Guild members filed in and out, quilted on the Gammill longarm machines, chatted, laughed, and dropped off binding and more finished quilts.

Whimsical loops in a variegated quilting thread popped on this bright quilt.

Gwen and Laurena kept both the Statler Stitchers going. Sara and Courtney tried free motion quilting on a longarm for the first time. They easily adapted, incorporating a variety of motifs in the quilts.
